| A note about Cream Dachshunds and our policies Many people do not like the emphasis placed on color, but we happen to have fallen in love with these cream beauties. The information on color located on this page for information and is not meant to place a "special" status on this color above others but rather to educate. Our primary focus in selecting a dog for our kennel is their confirmation and temperament which we take great pains in our selection of breeders. You can always breed color into a line but first you must start with excellent confirmation! Confirmation before color! A true cream dachshund can range anywhere in color from golden to a yellowish white. They should always have black noses. They can have black or self colored nails and should have a black "eye liner" around the eyes. Most creams are of English decent hence the term English Cream Dachshund. English Cream Dachshunds trace back to British imports which can be viewed on their pedigrees. Cream is a recessive gene and both parents must be cream or carry the cream gene or factor to produce cream pups. The term American Cream has come about to describe cream dachshunds that appear to be cream in color but are not of English decent. These dogs may or may not be true creams (double recessive). Some dogs labeled as cream may be recessive red or "e-red" dachshunds which will darken as they age. True cream dachshunds (English Creams) get lighter as they age. Check with the breeder of the puppy when in doubt. If a dachshund has the characteristic's listed above, they are probably a true cream. As previously stated, the recessive cream factor in English Cream Dachshunds is what is referred to genetically as a "double chinchilla factor" (also referred to as "double recessive" or "double dilute"). The chinchilla factor only acts on the red color. It does not act on black/tan or chocolate. This is why we can see black and cream dachshunds and chocolate and cream dachshunds. Dogs referred to as American Cream would be considered a dilute red or e-Red. It is thought that the American Cream Dachshund is due to a different dilution factor than the chinchilla factor. Many believe that it is the blue dilution factor that affects black (for blue) and chocolate (for Isabella) and that this dilution factor will also affect the base coat red. Please understand that we are a show breeding home and our main goal is to get the best dog to show and breed for ourselves. Puppies are graded at the age of 12 weeks and those that we don't measure up to our expectations will be sold as pets with a strict spay agreement. This means that you will not receive papers on your dog until we get confirmation that it has been spayed/nutered. Those puppies that we don't keep that show potential as a breeder/show will be sold to quality approved breeders that show their dogs. |
